James 1:17 “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and the widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
The scripture here is pretty understandable. It says what it means and it means what it says. It says that if we should have religion, it shouldn’t come from man’s imperfect doctrine but should align with the word of God, who (God) is perfect. This is what God calls us to do (the church), to visit the fatherless in their affliction. Those who do not have fathers, those who do not have shelter, those who do not have a place that they can be safe. To enter into those spaces and places where many, even to some Christians are not considered worthy to visit or safe to go. It is those places that need to see the light of Jesus Christ. Who is going to show them that right way, truth and life unless we, as Christians, show them which way they should go by telling them the PURE Gospel of Jesus Christ?
This scripture also says that we should visit the widows in their affliction. Those who have lost their significant other, lost those who they cherished and now are depressed, those who they loved and now feel lost, those who may have forgotten the goodness of God in their times of affliction. As Christians, we need to remind them that God is good, even though we may not always understand but through our limited understanding we KNOW (in heart) that we can trust God in all things. No matter what the world throws at us, we can remind those who may feel lonely that God has never left them nor forsook them. He loves them and he adores them, and wants them to LOVE and live an abundant life in HIM.
Then it goes on to say that we are to be unspotted from the world. What does that mean, unspotted? What do you see the world doing exactly? Not walking in the spirit but living according to the flesh. Having nothing to do with God or His word. Doing the exact opposite of what God wants us to do as children of God. What are the works of the flesh? Well, it says in Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the world of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanliness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, revellings and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in the time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” I suggest you look up each word by their definition if you do not completely understand what they mean.
These are considered the works of the flesh and SUCH like these works of the flesh the WORLD does, day and night. Thus, he calls us (the church) out of the world (to be unspotted, to be clean). To become separate from these works of the flesh and for us, now as children of God, to become heirs with Christ Jesus who had and has the fruit of the Spirit. The same God calls us to live like Jesus Christ, to obtain the SAME fruits of the Spirit, to live by them, to practice them, day and night. What are the fruits of the Spirit? The bible says further in Galatians 5:22-24 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.” Yes, we have! We have crucified the affections and the lusts of the world once we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior and lived according to His word. We see every single day on the News, on TV, in the movies, on shows, in the tabloids. These lusts and affections are everywhere but GREATER IS HE that is in US (the church) than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).
I believe this is what the Lord means to keep unspotted (clean, righteous) from the world. There are important things he calls us to do in this ONE scripture. To do works which as we know can’t redeem us for we are not saved by our works but by the grace of God AND to be clean (unspotted) which is to live and walk in the fruits of the Spirit. He calls us to visit the fatherless and widows in their times of afflictions, to have love, compassion and mercy as Jesus had love, compassion and mercy but also to live by faith by separating ourselves from the world by doing and living in the fruits of the Spirit. To be unspotted, to be clean and to live as Christ Jesus lived on earth. Thus, we should ask ourselves are we living according to the flesh or keeping ourselves unspotted from the world? Are we living and walking in the Spirit or are we walking and living in the ways of the world? As we should know God wants every area of our lives. He doesn’t want just some of us but ALL of us. If you have done these things without repenting, then repent and ask for the Father’s forgiveness and start living according to the word of God. Right now because the time is now. Give no thought to the former things but recognize the many blessings that are ahead once we give all to Him and obey Him.
I hope this post edified you some way, God bless you and God loves you.
