Sister Chat: The Long Hair Obsession

Maybe I can not necessarily say that it’s an obsession, but there is an undeniable bias going around when it comes to long hair and frankly I have had it! I have observed all too many times, what it seems to be, almost an opposition to short/shorter hair. Now, don’t take me the wrong way, there is nothing wrong with having a preference for long hair. I am also not saying that this goes for everybody because it certainly does not. If that’s what you like ( long hair), then there is nothing wrong with that in itself…embrace it 🙂 However, that is not what I am talking about…I am talking about those who put long hair on some beauty pedestal and strongly discourage others from cutting their long hair or puts down those who do have short/shorter hair. It infuriates me when I see/hear people commenting in a way that towards one another that puts down short hair/shorter hair because it really gives out the wrong message!

1) First and foremost, it’s ONLY hair: Long hair or short hair, I think we all need to remember it is just hair. It does not define you; it’s nice to have but it’s not all we have. If one cuts their hair, it’s not the end of the world and if one cuts it and does not like it, it’s also not the end of their world. Hair grows back; for some of us slowly and for some of us quickly but my point is…that it does. In the words of Indie Arie, ” I am not my hair” and neither are you.

2) Long hair is not the only beautiful thing; the beautiful thing is being able to choose how you want your hair to be…expressing yourself. If that means short, then go short and who cares what everybody else is saying. More often than not, I have heard people discouraging short hair simply because of the reason they like long hair; it’s one thing to have a preference and another thing to push your bias on somebody. We shouldn’t automatically shoot down someone if they ask us whether they should cut their hair or not/or if they considering doing so simply because you are all about long hair. Wear your hair the way you want it and don’t let people talk you out of something that you really want for yourself. You are the one who has to deal with whatever length of hair that you get ( it really not that important in the scheme of life) so be happy with what you’re going to do with your hair. If you don’t end up liking it, that’s okay. It’s not because short hair is bad…maybe short hair just is not for you. My little sister got her hair cut because that was something that she really had been wanting to do but her brother was quite insistence on her not cutting her hair and on her having longer hair period; he seriously has a case of long hair bias as he has voiced his own opinion about my hair being long too. As her older sister, I only want her to embrace whatever length of hair she wants and to do what works for her….she’s beautiful either way.

To conclude, I don’t have anything against long hair….some people would consider my hair long, but it’s not the only thing that should be seen as beautiful. We ought to embrace our different lengths and to go for it; without the hesitation that we might not be as beautiful/beautiful period without having long hair. Short hair…long hair…medium length hair…no hair….whatever it may be…there’s more than just one way of beauty out there.
