I grew up often saying “Happy Easter” with my grandmother insisting that it was called Happy Resurrection Day. Nevertheless, I remember participating in the Easter Egg hunts with sometimes a plastic bag or my light pink Easter basket with white polka dots all over it. Oh how I would love to get chocolate or even money in my eggs and I would be disappointed if my basket was full of inedibles ( well for me…Tootsie rolls and everything I did not really like). The big chocolate bunnies, decorating Easter Eggs, the Easter Egg hunts in the park…in the morning AND at night for the older kids…..the scary Easter Bunny in the stores. Oh what good times!
Then I grew up…
Growing up you get too old for Easter Eggs hunts; not because your necessarily tired of them but unless you don’t mind running out onto fields with a bunch of little kiddies OR just breaking the rules period….the time for Easter egg hunts surely passes. Then you go on to more adults things. Since there were no more Easter Egg hunts, the focus gets shifted to what Easter is all about for many. Granted Easter, according to man, is a holiday about chocolate bunnies, eggs, and candy and it is a booming business I bet! But perhaps that is because it is called “Easter” and that’s what you do for Easter. Truth be told, Easter is not about all of that but about God and that’s why my Grandmaw always calls it “Resurrection Day”. Let me tell you why:
Who is the resurrection ? John 11:25: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.
What happened ? 1 Thessalonians 4:14: For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
You see, Jesus Christ rose from the dead, he defeated death and because he rose, we can have eternal life. The bible days in 1 Peter 1:3: Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotton son that whosoever should believe in him shall have eternal life.
By Christ dying on the cross, he paid our sin debt and by him RISING from the dead, he had conquered death so that we can have eternal life beyond this life.
1 Corinthians 15: 56-57: The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Luke 24:1-12: New International Version (NIV) Jesus Has Risen
24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Because this happened, he died on the cross but ROSE, we have the promise of eternal life which comes through salvation. Not works, not blood…just in Jesus Name we have salvation. The bible says in Romans 10:9-10- “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
This is true for anyone, everyone…..
Let not the Easter bunnies, eggs and all of the other “things” take away from the true significance of the day which is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It has a meaning far more important that can change people’s lives. Now that I think about it, as a personal thought, let not the Easter eggs/etc be a distraction from God. As a child, I went to church with my parents and listened to the story of Jesus Resurrection but I still participated in the Easter egg hunts and all of that. Let Easter not be about consumerism and buying into greediness (have you been into the seasonal Easter aisle in your store ? ) but about Jesus Christ. This post isn’t intended to throw everything about Easter under the bus but this post is intended to about God. So hey, what does a Easter bunny/Chocolate eggs got do with God ? Nothing ;p.
Hope you all have a wonderful, safe, Resurrection Day!
